Native Planting Bed Installation
Over the past few months, the Community Enhancement Team has been designing and installing a native plant garden in front of a restroom building at Morrisville Community Park. Staff removed the overgrown shrubs and trees and replaced them with new planting beds that have interesting design features such as boulders, metal trellises, and walking paths. A group of about 12 volunteers assisted with the initial installation of the native plants. Additional plants and signage will be planted as the weather warms up. The bed will one day serve as a learning garden for park attendees to discover the importance of planting natives and providing space to our wonderful pollinators.
Arbor Day Tree Planting
In celebration of North Carolina Arbor Day on March 23rd, Public Works Staff and members of the Town Council hosted a native tree planting at Shiloh Park. A variety of native trees including Swamp Chestnut Oak, Yellow Wood, Celebration Sugar Maple, Sugar Hackberry, and Scarlet Oak were planted around the shelter area of the park. By planting a diverse variety of trees, the ecosystem becomes more robust and is more resistant to stress and disease. As these trees mature, they will provide shade during the hot summer months and habitat for flora and fauna.
Morrisville Community Park Walking Path Renovations
The Public Works Community Enhancement Team recently completed the renovation of a walking path and installed erosion control plantings adjacent to the ballfield restroom building at Morrisville Community Park. The combination of visitor foot traffic and too much shade for grass to grow, caused the area to start eroding into the nearby stream. The team widened the path and installed permeable pavers to improve the drainage in the walking area. A variety of shade-loving native plants were installed between the path and the stream to absorb water, sediment, and debris. Park visitors now have a safer route to access the restrooms at the back of the building.

Morrisville Community Park Arbor Day Sapling Planting
The Public Works Community Enhancement Team coordinated with the Morrisville stewardship program to set aside a 2,000 square foot plot of land adjacent to the Morrisville Community Park playground for forest rehabilitation. The team utilized tree saplings that were donated by Wake County and Project Pando, a nonprofit organization that collects seeds from the local community and assists in environmental restoration projects around the Triangle. The project was completed on March 20, 2024 with the help of over 20 volunteers. Associated town of Morrisville partners Project Pando and Trees for the Triangle were able to provide planting guidance and expertise to all volunteers in attendance.
Morrisville Community Park Tree Planting
The Public Work’s Community Enhancement team planted 18 trees at Morrisville Community Park with the help of over 20 volunteers from our local community. The location for this planting was behind the large baseball field at Morrisville Community Park. This marks the third and final large tree installation of the 2023/24 fiscal year.
Morrisville’s stewardship program and Morrisville’s Environment and Stormwater Committee were instrumental in gathering support for these projects. These Winter plantings have shown the town’s commitment, both from town staff and an incredible display of public interest, in improving our tree canopy.

Nature Walk and Lookout on the Hill
The Community Enhancement team tackled a big project this Winter. A largely eroded hill near the picnic shelter appeared to be a prime spot for a new landscaping bed and corresponding seating area to look out over the park. The team planted an abundance of native shrubs and flowers to turn the area into its own nature walk. We hope that this area will become a beneficial amenity for all park users to enjoy.
